For the first task, we selected a creative pitch from Kickstarter to break down, then took notes on many different aspects of the pitch. My group chose to analyse a video pitch for "Curfboard," a skateboard that acts like a surfboard.
As a group, we found the pitch to be professionally-made, yet informal and upbeat. Throughout the duration of the video, there are visuals of the product being demonstrated. As well as this, the 'Curfboard' and its abilities are regularly highlighted. The pitch is structured so that the product is shown and talked about, then we see the process of its construction, before finishing with the creators and the logo for the 'Curfboard.' It gave me a somewhat clear idea of what the product is and what it does; this could have been improved by better explaining the comparisons with the product to surfboards and how it differs from them. Another thing that could improve the pitch would be by spacing out the product demonstration visuals throughout the entire length of the video, although it was overall a well-made pitch.
The analysis of the Kickstarter pitch was a good way of looking at positive and negative aspects of a specific pitch, and whether the product was something that could interest a potential customer through the video. It made me consider how I would present my final major project pitch, as well as highlighting some of the things not to do in a presentation.

What's the Plan?
The next task challenged us to summarise our own final major projects and attempt to explain it to both a family member, and an unknown professional. We then had to use an online artist's statement writing generator to create a statement about our descriptions of our own style of work.
10 words or less
Science-fiction graphic novels exploring humanity and issues of morality.
Family member explanation
My project is a series of comics that show stories about space exploration and alien discoveries, set in the future. It also has underlying themes relating to human issues and narrative structural influences from Greek mythology. This results in a physical books in a short collection of stories.
Professional explanation
My project is a short series of graphic novels set in a fictional futuristic universe. The stories explore possibilities of what might happen if humanity made first contact with alien sentient life. The series has underlying human issues and moral dilemmas in the stories, that provoke thought in the reader. The novels take narrative influences from Greek mythology such as the stories of the Hero's Journey and Orpheus in the Underworld. They will be produced digitally and traditionally, with the end result being a collection of four short illustrated books.
Artist's statement
"Oliver Randall (1996, Cheltenham, United Kingdom) is and artist who mainly works with drawing. With a conceptual approach, Randall tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way, likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.
His drawings directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context."
I feel that these tasks were useful in helping to define my FMP, as well as consider how I would explain it in different contexts. They aided me in consolidating what exactly my project is or will be. However, I didn't find the artist's statement task to be useful or appropriate to explaining my project.
The Hero of a Thousand Faces is a real page-turner. |
Harmonic Duet
For the final task, we had to interview another person about their final major project and then write a review about the proposed outcome for their FMP. When writing the review, we had to imagine we were selling the project to potential customers.
FMP interview - Jack Ashworth
What is your FMP? - "A series of informative books focused on animals."
What are you trying to communicate with it? - "To teach basic information about the different creatures that exist."
Who is your target audience? - "2-5 year olds (early childhood)."
How will you produce your FMP? - "It will be digitally created with physical elements."
What research will you do for the project? - "Existing children's books and the extra accessories that come with them."
FMP Review
This project is a creative and interactive series of informative children's books about all sorts of creatures. Made for young children, these books will inspire and build on friendly children's book formats that your child is already comfortable with. They even come with extra accessories to enhance their reading experience!
By learning about another person's project, and evaluating their ideas, it helped me to contrast with my own project and outcomes. Added to this, reviewing the other project was a good way to learn how to pitch a product through writing.
